Josephine Matela, GBDC President

Josephine C. Matela, a long time resident of Brockport, was Mayor of the village from 2001 to 2005. In her capacity as the village's chief executive, "Jo" oversaw an annual budget of $7 million and managed a full-time staff of five in the village office, a police department with 12 full-time officers and one part-time officer, the 17-member Department of Public Works, a Brockport Fire Department staff of nearly 135 volunteers, the Dispatch Office, and the Brockport Ambulance Department. She is particularly proud of her fiscal management of the village, which had a general fund balance of $1.4 million when she left office.

Ms. Matela has owned and operated the Red Bird Tea Shoppe for more than 10 years on the corner of Main and Water streets in downtown Brockport. Jo was also the President of the Brockport Merchants Association from 2005 thru 2012 and is a member of the Brockport Rotary Club. She has also been active in the preservation of Main Street and the beautification of the village, and has also been a Welcome Center greeter for many years welcoming travelers on the Erie Canal.

Ms. Matela attended the State University College at Brockport. She has resided in the village with her husband, Joseph A. Matela, for more than 30 years. Jo is the mother of two grown sons and the grandmother of six.
